Code and data
Open-source code and datasets from the Digital Forest Lab.
Code
-
VoxLAD_RT
Ray-tracing code that estimates leaf and wood area density in 3D voxel arrays from terrestrial lidar scans. It follows each laser pulse through the voxels it crosses and applies the contact frequency method, using leaf and wood orientation, the number of pulses intercepted and the length of their paths in each voxel. Comes with a user manual.
-
VoxClump
Tools for acquiring and processing Riegl VZ ground lidar data to estimate the foliage clumping of broadleaf trees at the scale of a single voxel.
-
Norman_stems
MATLAB code and user manual for the Norman (1979) canopy radiative transfer model, modified to include radiation absorption by stems and multiple scattering within layers of clumped foliage. From profiles of leaf area, wood area and foliage clumping, it computes vertical profiles of visible (PAR) and near-infrared (NIR) radiation absorbed by sunlit and shaded leaves and by wood, along with absorption by the soil.
Data

Ground lidar data, leaf and wood area density at six broadleaf deciduous forest plots
Two datasets: the RiSCAN project files, with the lidar point clouds of each plot aligned to a common reference system, and the voxel arrays of leaf and wood area for each plot, with their vertical profiles. The voxel arrays were produced with VoxLAD_RT. Documentation is included.
